5 Free or Cheap Family Days Out in Hampshire

Here at Little Pickles Markets, we are all about helping families save money.  Well, summer can be an expensive time to keep the kids entertained during the holidays. So I thought I would share 5 of our favourite free or cheap family days out here in Hampshire

New Forest National Park – Hampshire is lucky enough to be the home of this outstanding expanse of natural beauty. The New Forest has something for every family. From a walk across the heathland to wandering around the shops and cafes in Lyndhurst. A run amongst the ancient trees to spotting the ponies that roam free. Plus not forgetting the 26 miles of coastline included in the park.

Moors Valley – This is on the Hampshire/Dorset border. We have visited and met friends at Moors Valley on many occasions. I have found that it has enough to keep any aged children entertained. There is a big adventure playground divided in 2 for the toddlers/preschoolers and another for older more confident children. You can enjoy a walk around the lake and spot the miniature steam train. You can ride on the steam train at an extra cost. Take a picnic and make a day of it, the main area has toilets and a cafe area, plus a water fountain to top up water bottles. After lunch, we usually head into the woodland where you can follow the Zog trail or just explore yourself. In the forest there are more play areas, suitable for more confident climbers.

Fort Nelson – Great for the adventurous kids to explore. The 19-acre site includes the fully restored victorian fort, ammunition bunkers, underground tunnels plus more. The kids loved exploring the spooky tunnels and were wowed by the size of some of the guns. Throughout the summer holidays, they have special activities on, check out their website for details. Entry to the fort is free but parking is £3 per car

Netley Abbey and Cruise Ship Spotting – The monastery is situated in Royal Victoria Country Park. The Abbey overlooks the Weston shoreline, so whilst you relax and enjoy a picnic you can spot the cruise ships going by.

Southampton Common Park – The common boasts a large nature play area, with water play. The park encourages adventurous play with climbing area plus a zip wire my kids loved. As well as the adventurous area there are traditional parts like swings. There is a kiosk on-site that is open during weekends and school holidays. Once the kids get bored in the park, take a ball or scooters and they can explore the rest of the vast park.
