5 Free or Cheap Family Days Out in Wiltshire

Here at Little Pickles Markets, we are all about helping families save money.  Well, summer can be an expensive time to keep the kids entertained during the holidays. So I thought I would share 5 of our favourite free or cheap family days out here in Wiltshire

Lydiard Park – Top of the list, the kids never get bored at Lydiard Park. You can take a walk around the lake and grounds. There are two adventure playgrounds, one suitable for tots upto about school age and another from roughly 6 upto young teens. The kids often find trees to climb and can play for hours, while I relax. Facilities include toilets and a cafe plus ice cream parlour for those hot days. Lydiard Park often holds special events too, so worth checking out their diary of events. Please note there are parking charges.

Avebury Stone Circle – They say kids thrive on fresh air, well a couple of hours running around Avebury Stone circle will definitely wear out your little pickle and clear your head too. The magical stone circle is thought to date back to 2500 to 2000 BC and constructed in Neolithic times by The Beaker people. They are also believed to have had a role in the formation of world famous ancient site at Stonehenge. Parking is free if you are National Trust Members, this route isn’t particularly buggy friendly so best to use a sling or carrier for little little ones

John Coles Park, Chippenham – Guaranteed on a hot day I will hear these words from the kids ‘Can we go to the beach’. But it is a bit of a trek, at least 1.5 hours to our nearest beach. The next best option is the splash pad. John Coles park in Chippenham has a great water play area, with a very reasonable cafe right next door. The park also has a good sized park. Take a picnic and arrange to meet some friends and make a day of it. Parking on local streets is free.

Barton Farm, Bradford on Avon – Bradford on Avon has lots to explore, from the quirky streets of the town to a walk along the canal plus The Tithe Barn is great for a photo opportunity. The kids can play in the park before or after a walk or cycle or scoot along the canal. We usually park in the station car park where parking charges apply.

Westbury White Horse – Wiltshire is well known for it’s many White Horses, our most visited one is Westbury White Horse. The kids and I can pop there for a walk/clamber for a few hours or longer if we take a picnic. The views are magnificent and on a clear day, you can see for miles. Sometimes we take a kite to fly in the open space on the other side of the car park. Parking is free
